UpStand for iPad is one sleek stand

UpStand iPad Stand

There are a lot of cases and stands for the iPad which attract you because of their looks. Sometimes, stability and durability are also important than looks. But what if you get all the three in one package? It will be something like an iPad stand nirvana, if you know what I mean.

If you have ever shopped for an iPad stand, you’ll know how many varieties of these are available. I’m talking only stands, not docks. Some of them offer a very limited structure and are not always stable. You will not be completely willing to put your $500+ iPad on that stand even after you buy it.

Some of the stands are sturdy like rock, and also look like a rock. So you dont feel like keeping such an ugly thing on your desk. For this reason, most people just dont buy an iPad stand. If you are one such person, here is something you are sure to love. Just Mobile has come up with a new iPad stand called the UpStand.

The UpStand is made completely of aluminium, but has rubber padding wherever needed. For example, at the bottom of the stand, there is a rubber circle so that the stand does not slip off the table with your iPad on it. Also, the stand has rubber padding wherever it is needed to hold you iPad safe.

Also, I think the UpStand is one of the very few iPad stands which are really sleek and maintain the sleekness of the iPad. Even though it has minimal materials, it is awesome sturdy and safe. One more attractive thing about the UpStand is that it accounts for both the portrait and the landscape mode of the iPad. So you dont have to worry about getting one for each orientation.

Optimum TV iOS app does not work on jailbroken iDevices

September 26, 2011  |  iPad Apps  |  No Comments  |  Share

Optimum TV app for iOS

Optimum is one of the big players in the cable TV business in New York. The company not only offers cable TV, but also offers iOS apps for those who are interested. This means you can watch all your favorite TV shows and movies on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad (iPad being my favorite choice as the display size is the best among the three for watching videos). The company also offers on demand video services on the iOS app.

But now, there is a new finding. It is found out that the latest, updated app of Optimum for iOS does not work on jailbroken iOS devices. I’m not telling that it wont install, it will get installed from the App Store for sure, but you will not be able to use the app. You will get the error saying that there is some problem with the unrecognized and unregistered version of iOS.

One of the members of EverythingiCafe reports how he faced this problem when he tried to launch the app and use it on his jailbroken iDevice. The error is said to be due to an ‘unauthorized and modified’ version of iOS. The excerpt from his report is given below:

“I have a jailbroken IPhone 4 with IOS 4.3.3. I recently downloaded the new Optimum TV App from the app store. When I log in with my optimum ID, it tells me that it has detected that I’m using an unauthorized and modified version of the Apple operating system. It goes on to say that I must update to the current IOS to use this App. I’m definitely not a newbie to the jail break world and have never had this happen with any other app.”

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Remember the Skype app problem? So, did you face the problem?

Want a 70 inch iPad screen?

PadZilla

iPad is a great little gadget, well, not so little in fact. Its got a big 9.7 inch display which is just a pleasure to use. But sometimes, watching movies or playing games on it is not as good as on a big monitor computer, or on your HDTV. Then comes the obvious solution that you can connect your iPad to your Apple TV and stream all the content you need to the HDTV using Apple TV and AriPlay’s mirroring feature.

But what if you dont have a HDTV or an Apple TV? We are talking about the worst case scenario here. Or what if you have have both a HDTV and an Apple TV but you just dont want to use them as your iPad’s external display? Well, there is however a solution, if you are ready to get a dedicated iPad external display a bit more bigger than the HDTV in your living room.

This is not a joke, and now that you have read the title of this post, there is no much surprise about what we are talking here. So lets get started. We are talking about a giant 70 inch display for your iPad. This is just not another HDTV, but an actual interactive display. Yes, you read it right, interactive. So what? Does it have a speaker and a mic? Not really. Even though it doesn’t respond to sound, it sure responds to touch.

This means that this giant iPad display has a touch screen and it supports multi-touch. This means the old days of playing Angry Birds on the iPad’s display is over. Hook this PadZilla on to your wall, or place it on a big table, and get started with Angry Birds. Manufactured by Crunchy Logistics, the PadZilla is available in all sizes. If you think 70 inches is too small for your living room, you can order a bigger one, 150 inches max. Oh yeah, just be ready to space $35,000 for this.

Steve Jobs visioned iCloud back in 1997

September 25, 2011  |  iPad News  |  No Comments  |  Share

iCloud Logo big

Since how many years have you been actually using cloud computing? Or exactly from how many years have you been hearing about cloud computing? For a lot of people, the concept is still not clear. There are so many people in the technological world, who are supposed to be heads of technical departments in different kinds of organisations, who think that cloud computing really has something to do with the clouds in the sky and weather. But Steve Jobs was different, and he still is.

Way back in 1997, at the WWDC Developer Conference, he said something. He spoke about his vision of how computing will be in the future and how he wants to participate in making that happen. I dont think most people dint give a damn about what he said. But now, he has introduced iCloud, a technology that all Apple products users are sure to love. This is his vision come true. And the best part is, right from the beginning of dreaming of his vision to accomplishing that, Steve Jobs has been here and did what he wanted to do, make it all happen.

At the 1997 WWDC Developer Conference, he said:

“Let me describe the world I live in.”

And more, we are all living in the world that he wanted to live in. The attached five minutes video is worth a watch. You will know how determined Steve Jobs was and still is. His final words were:

“I can’t communicate to you how awesome this is unless you use it. And what you would decide within a day or two is that carrying around these non-connected computers or computers with tons of state in them — tons of data and state in them — is Byzantine by comparison.”

If you are thinking its here and you are already in the cloud, I believe this is just the beginning. There is a lot more to come.

Donate your iPad for TFA’s good cause

Teach for America iPad Donation

Did you buy an iPad 2 recently? What did you do with your old iPad? You sold it out, right? Well, most of us do. But if you went to any Apple Store recently, you must have noticed that there is a place to donate your old used iPad, did you notice? Even if you have noticed, you must have thought that its for Apple’s refurbished iPad program. You thought Apple will get your used iPad for free, refurbish it, and then sell it out for money. Well, you are wrong.

Have you heard about TFA, or Teach For America? This is not a different story, your old iPad is related to this. The Teach for America program is a government initiative which picks up talented students from top universities from around the country, puts them into a rigorous 5 week training, and them lets them off to poverty ridden parts of America. These trained graduates will then teach students in such parts.

Now what does this has to do with your old iPad? When you donate an iPad for free at an Apple Store, the company will take your tablet, refurbish it, and then distribute it to such teachers to use in the Teach for America program. These teachers will then use these iPads as an educational tools, and also as an incentive to motivate students to study better.

Such teachers say that when students know they will be getting some iPad time at the end of the class if they finish their work early, they actually do finish it early. Isn’t this good? Steve Job’s wife, Laurene Powell, is one of the board members in the TFA program. So she has made sure that Apple is doing its part for the cause and not just concentrate only for the money.

So what do you think? Will you donate your old iPad for the cause?

Buy your new iPad from an iPad vending machine

September 23, 2011  |  iPad News  |  No Comments  |  Share

iPad Vending Machine

There are lot of varieties of vending machines, starting from candies and drinks to electronic gadgets like digital cameras. According to Wikipedia, was invented by Hero of Alexandria. The Greek engineer’s machine would dispense holy water upon coin deposits. But now, you can see the evolution, and I guess there is no holy water vending machine anymore.

But there is something new. There is now an iPad vending machine. Yes, just put in the money and get an iPad from the machine. Isn’t that the most simplest way to shop? This news comes in from The Consumerist. The iPad vending machines will be placed in the men’s department at popular and major retail stores. As a matter of fact, if you are anywhere near Macy’s store, you can have a look at one of the vending machines right now. The Consumerist spotted one at a Macy’s store, the one you can see in the photo. The blog says:

“It was an unexpected sight. I guess impulse buys aren’t just for Skittles anymore. Yes, the iPad vending machine. Perfect for those times when you’re running late and need to pick up a 3-pack of Hanes and a $499 multitouch Wi-Fi-enabled tablet computer in the same trip.”

As a matter of another fact, big stores like Walmart, Target, and others already have a vending machine system which they call the one stop shop system. But it is surprising that Macy’s store, a store which is in the same mall where Apple has one of its huge and attractive Apple Stores, is selling iPads from a vending machine.

One more thing to consider is that you can easily get your hands on one of these iPads from the vending machine pretty easily, but what is the return policy on them? Confirm that before you drop bills worth $500 into the machine.

Research says students who use iPad are better than others

iPads used in schools

A lot of institutions, universities, colleges, and schools are now abandoning the traditional books made of paper and are starting to use the electronic versions of them. And to use the electronic versions, they need a hardware system. And most of the institutions, universities, colleges, and schools are using the most popular iPad for the same.

Not even just the educational institutions, but government agencies, military, air force, and marine forces in different countries are using iPads to replace the paper. This may be a move to make the planet more greener, but I believe its done because it reduces the large amount of paper that is to be carried around and makes finding data in the books more easier, among many other advanced features.

A recent study however is proving that students who are using iPads for studying are doing good in their tests than students who are using the traditional paper made books. But how is iPad using the scores to improve? Well, that is still a mystery, which I believe will be solved later if not sooner.

Abilene Christian University is where the results are coming from. And the report says the following:

“In one study, students who annotated text on their iPads scored 25% higher on questions regarding information transfer than their paper-based peers. In a separate project covering iPad usage patterns, two researchers studying ACU’s first all-digital class discovered that the iPad promotes “learning moments” and helps students make more efficient use of their time. Grad students working in an online program reported a 95% satisfaction rate for online iPad-based coursework. As far as the ACU studies are concerned, the iPad in education is a success story.”

There are a lot of developers for the iOS platform who are working hard to develop apps centered around student and teachers alike. This is helping out students and teachers to better adjust with the latest technologies in the world to make learning and teaching more fun, interesting, and useful. I hope this continues.

Its Playing for iPad plays any video file

Its Playing for iPad

VLC was an awesome video player for the iOS platform. It played almost any kind of the file you threw at it. But recently, due to some reasons, the app was pulled out from the App Store. Now, there is no app which gives the same feature. Oh wait, I stand corrected. There is, and its called Its Playing.

I know its kind of a weird name, but who actually cares as long as its doing what its supposed to do. And its case, its suppose to play just any file you that throw at it, just like VLC did. So this app is pretty much like a VLC replacement, but I have my doubts if this would have really become a VLC alternative if VLC was still available.

Anyway, according to the developers of this app, Its Playing is able to play just any 720p video you give it to play. Below is what the description of the app says:

What differentiates It’s playing, apart from pricing and the quality of the user interface, is the engine that takes advantage of the outstanding hardware and operating system it runs on.

AdditionFlow© is our optimized process for making sure that you get more video frames more synchronized with the audio, ensuring the best viewing experience.

The list of features of the app is as follows:

  • Play all video and audio formats commonly available on the web — including AVI, RMVB, MKV and FLV (Flash Video)
  • AdditionFlow© presentation engine: it plays most 720p hi-res video superbly — it’s so great we’re going to patent it.
  • Image and sound precision controls
  • File and folder management
  • Improved privacy management
  • Dynamic video quality monitoring and diagnostic
Its Playing is actually available for all of three iOS devices, and if you are willing to buy, you can buy Its Playing for $1.99 from here.
