iPad 2 Jailbreak got Leaked: the JailbreakME 3.0

Nothing’s more exciting than waiting for the most anticipated jailbreak program for iPad 2 by Comex. But yesterday, the hardwork done by comex in the past months hoping that a perfect program will soon come out, has been came out prematurely in the world. The beta version of JailbreakMe 3.0 have been scattered and circulated in the web without the permission from the developer. Although I wanted to write immediately about the iPad 2 jailbreak, I still have the patience to wait for the REAL one.

Here is the exact story of why the beta version of the JailbreakME 3.0 has leaked:

This started when Ryan Lobbins, a 20-year old Computer Science major from Arizona, has stumbled upon the website of which he believed to be owned by Comex. As what Ryan wrote in his blog, he never intended to leak the jailbreak files.

This all started late one night on the 27th of June. I was playing Star Craft with some friends reading Comex’s twitter updates like every other person waiting for the jailbreak. That is when I had a crazy idea just to search a site he posted in a previous tweet. That site was www.qoid.us , during my initial search, the main thing that came up was comex’s bannerbomb exploit for the wii. This lead me to believe even more that the site was his. The next thing I did was just do a search for directories on his site and that is when I stumbled upon it. I saw a folder called saffron that grabbed my attention, mainly because jbme 2.0 was star.

So what would you do if you stumbled on a website that had all the data for the jailbreak people have been waiting months for? At first I wasn’t sure what to do, let alone believe I found the files. The only true indication that I found them was all the pdf files, deb files named after different iOS devices, and a php file. The last thing I wanted was to just send out all the files saying here they are. As someone who has worked on a project for years in the past I would hate for my work to leak out before myself or the team was ready. Comex had been working on this for almost a year.

So Ryan tried the jailbreak into his iPad but didn’t work out. Before going to a vacation, he uploaded the files to his personal website to try for other devices.

While on holiday night of the 1st of July, he thought of it again if the jailbreak really work or just to his iDevice. He contacted someone he met in the forum MultimediaWill (AKA Will Sayer) and sent the PDF file he uploaded. To their surprise, the jailbreak work. It quickly jailbroke the iPad 2 of Will who then swore to him up and down not to leak the files. But in the following morning, he knew Will was lying due to the leaked files being circulated publicly including his videos posted in youtube.

By now, most of the links have been removed. I hope that Comex will still continue his work despite the unexpected situation that some has brought.
