How to use your iPhone as an external keyboard for your iPad

External Keyboard for iPad

Every iPad owner who also owns an iPhone or an iPod Touch, must have at some time the thought of using his iPhone or iPod Touch as a remote keyboard to type on the iPad. I’m sure. Well, unfortunately currently there are too many restriction on the iOS SDK for an iPhone to act as a remote keyboard for the iPad system wide.

There is however an app available in the App Store called the External Keyboard. It has been developed by G.P Imports and will cost you $0.99 to download, but before you think that your wish has finally come true and you go ahead and download it, there are a few things you should know about how the app functions.

The first thing that you need to know is that you need to install the app on both your iPad and your iPhone (you will be charged only once). Next, the app needs to be running on both your iPad and your iPhone. The app connects through local Wi-Fi or bluetooth. On the iPad, the app opens as a browser and on the iPhone or iPod Touch, it opens as a keyboard. Now to start typing, you need to tap on the fields you need to type on the iPad, and then start typing on the iPhone. One advantage of using this app is that it lets you use all the languages that are available on the iPhone’s keyboard. iPad’s keyboards are limited to only a few languages. The app also comes with an email app along with the browser app. You just need to type what you need to send as an e-mail. Once you select the option to send the mai,l it pastes the text on to a new e-mail. Now you need to get back to your iPad to complete the process of sending the e-mail. It works the same way if you need to type on another application and composition views. Type using the iPhone then copy and paste it where ever you want to on the iPad.

All this is certainly not elegant and not very practical. Until Apple removes the restriction on the iOS, however, this seems to be the only way.
